Ronald Koeman edging closer to staying at Barcelona

Ronald Koeman will continue as Barcelona's coach next season following weeks of uncertainty surrounding his future, president Joan Laporta confirmed on Thursday

Laporta had said a "period of reflection" was needed after two wins in their final six games saw Barca miss out on the La Liga title. In the end, they finished outside the top two for the first time since 2008, although they did win the Copa del Rey. Laporta had refused to publicly commit to Koeman, who was hired by Josep Maria Bartomeu, the previous president. Koeman still has a contract with a significant buy-out clause, but it’s expected that a public announcement will be made this week. There is talk of a meeting between the president and manager in which Laporta insisted Koeman should play a more attractive and more attacking style of play. Laporta reportedly brought up Barcelona’s women’s section, which recently won the treble while playing a very stylish brand of football. Talks followed with Koeman and his agent, Rob Jansen, last week, when Laporta asked the coach for 15 days to sound out possible replacements. However, with a lack of credible candidates to replace Koeman, coupled with having to pay between €8 million and €12 million to fire him, Laporta has decided to back the Dutchman, whose contract runs until next summer.
